Peachy!

As any seasoned alcoholic in Japan will tell you, Suntory’s -196 range is always a reliable option for getting smashed on a budget (and facilitating further bad decisions). I rarely stray from the king of all chuhai, the 9% Double Grapefruit, but the lure of a “limited edition” was enough to draw me in. A cynical person might say it’s only limited until Suntory slightly recycles the flavour next year, but let’s give it a try anyway.

The can is pretty cute. I think the biggest disappointment so far is that it’s only 7%. Alcohol shrinkflation in action.
Time to crack it open.

It’s clear (thankfully, because drinks with fruit pulp are…not my thing) and the smell is intensely chemical, with a faint whiff of cat wee. Let’s hope the taste is better.
Hmm, it’s actually quite weak and watery at first, followed by a strong artificial peach aftertaste. Pretty standard stuff for the -196 range. If you’ve tried the others, you’ll know what to expect. The longer you drink it, the stronger the fruitiness becomes…which is either a plus or a minus, depending on how much you enjoy drinking peach mouthwash.
If you’re a chuhai enthusiast like me, I think there are better options out there. That is unless you’re a big fan of Japanese fruit gummies. Try one yourself before it gets fed back into the flavour recycler at Suntory HQ.
