How to use a WISE card at ATM in Japan
Or: How to convince a Japanese ATM that your money actually exists
BY JEFF
When you’re out having a few drinkypoos, sometimes it’s nice to have a way of getting cash from your bank account.
Sure, the regular ATMs at banks, and even the popular convenience-store ones, can work perfectly well with many foreign cards.
But what happens when you’ve got a Wise account that you signed up for IN JAPAN?
You stick your card in.
The ATM looks at it.
And then spits it straight back out at your lovely face.
Or, in my case, my lopsided and badly messed-up face.
So what now?
Well…
I found out how to get out some bloody cash.
And it’s mainly a two-part answer.
1. Find an AEON Bank ATM
This is the bit I didn’t know.
For Wise cards issued in Japan, Wise currently says that cash withdrawals in Japan are generally supported at AEON Bank, E-net and Daily Yamazaki ATMs – although they also point out that availability isn’t guaranteed at every individual machine.
So why am I banging on about Mini Stop?

Because AEON owns Mini Stop, and you’ll find AEON Bank ATMs in some of them.
Which is pretty bloody handy when you’re wandering around at stupid o’clock thinking:
“I’ve got Β₯600 left and somehow another four hours of bad decisions to make.”
Find an AEON Bank ATM.
Give it a go.
2. DON’T USE THE NORMAL ATM OPTION
This is the really stupid bit.
If you treat the Wise card like a normal Japanese bank card, the ATM may basically look at you and say:
NO.
And then you’re left wondering:
Is my PIN wrong?
Did I put the card in backwards?
Is Wise broken?
Is the machine broken?
Did I somehow spend all my money on beer?
The answer is probably:
No.
When the ATM gives you the option, select:
INTERNATIONAL CARD
That’s it.
Apparently the ATM just needed you to tell it what it already knew.
Go through the normal process.
Enter your PIN.
Choose how much cash you want.
Confirm everything.
And then…
HAZARRRR!
MONEY.
Wise itself says that, when prompted, you should select “International Cards.”
π³ DON’T HAVE A WISE ACCOUNT?
If you’re living in Japan and regularly moving money between currencies and countries, Wise is worth looking at.

You can use a Wise account to send, receive and convert money between currencies, and the Wise debit card can be used for spending and ATM withdrawals.
π WANT TO GIVE IT A GO?
BDJ may receive a referral reward if you sign up and meet Wise’s qualifying conditions. This doesn’t cost you anything extra.
π΄ HOW MUCH CAN YOU WITHDRAW?
This is where things get slightly more complicated.
Wise has its own withdrawal limits and fees, while the ATM operator can potentially charge its own fee too.
Wise currently advertises Β₯25,000 per month of ATM withdrawals without a Wise withdrawal fee for its Japan offering, although ATM-owner fees can still apply.
So don’t blindly hammer the Β₯50,000 button because you’ve suddenly remembered you have a drinking problem.
Check the screen before confirming.
And if the ATM asks whether you want it to convert the money for you, pay attention to the exchange-rate option rather than just repeatedly pressing the biggest green button.
π€ WHAT ABOUT 7-ELEVEN?
This is the obvious question.
Japan has approximately 900 billion 7-Elevens.
Surely one of them will give me my money?
Maybe.
But if you’re specifically having problems with a Japan-issued Wise card, Wise’s current guidance points you towards:
- AEON Bank
- E-net
- Daily Yamazaki
And remember: individual ATMs aren’t guaranteed to work every time.
So if the machine has just rejected your card for the third time…
STOP FAFFING
Find another ATM.
π§ JEFF’S TWO-STEP METHOD
NEED CASH FROM YOUR WISE CARD?
1οΈβ£ FIND AN AEON BANK ATM
Mini Stop is worth checking.
2οΈβ£ SELECT INTERNATIONAL CARD
Don’t use the normal Japanese-card option if the ATM gives you the international option.
Then follow the instructions.
That’s it.

π€ FINAL THOUGHT
It’s genuinely impressive that in 2026 we have AI capable of writing poetry, generating videos and probably deciding whether humanity deserves to continue…
…but an ATM still needs you to explicitly tell it:
“HELLO. THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL CARD.”
It couldn’t just work that out from the bloody card… Still, humanity has hope.
Viva la resistance.
And remember:
There were only two Terminator movies. βοΈ
